Connection - Matilda

"'Miss Temple, Miss Temple, what- what is that girl with curled hair? Red hair ma'am curled- curled all over?' And extending his cane he pointed to the awful object, his hand shaking as he did so." (64)

Mr. Brocklehurst, the head of Lowood, the school in which Jane attends, is very similar to Ms. Trunchbull in Matilda. Similar to Mr. Brockleshurst who does not allow the girls to have curly hair, Ms. Trunchbull does not allow the girls at her school to wear pigtails. Mr. Brocklehurst makes Miss Temple cut off her hair, Trunhcbull throws the girl across the playground by her pigtails. After Miss Temple cuts off the girls hair, she tries to comfort the girl by talking to her about how her hair will eventually grow back, similar to Miss Honey redoing the little girls braids in Matilda after Ms. Trunchball had messed them up. Miss Honey and Miss Temple are similar also because they are the first people to care for Matilda and Jane. Since both Matilda and Jane have a horrible home life, they find a lot of enjoyment in being at school. Both Miss Honey and Miss Temple see that in the girls, and make sure they feel comfort at the schools. Miss Honey even helped Matilda learn her magical powers. Miss Temple did not have quite the impact on Jane, that Miss Honey had on Matilda, but they were both important women in the girls lives.

  1. I LOVE MATILDA. this is a great connection and i made the same one. On top of the connections you made they are also both raised by extended family and both are bullied by their cousins. i think matilda is kind of like what Jane Eyre would have been like if the book stopped and focused at her time on Lowood
