Diction

"I am glad you are no relation of mine. I will never call you aunt again as long as I live. I will never come to visit you when I am grown up; and if any one asks me how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say the very thought of you makes me sick, and that you treated me with miserable cruelty." (36)

I think this quote is quite powerful. Jane has stood up for herself previous times, but now she has nothing holding her back since she will be leaving for Lowood soon. Jane breaks the ties of her cruel family, and is finally free. This quote really gets the reader to feel for Jane. She is an orphan going off on her own. Even though she is being sent to a boarding school, there is still little she could do from their. We also know that even though she is escaping her evil Aunt, she is moving in with an even bigger tyrant, Mr. Brocklehurst. This quote really helps the reader to get engaged in the story. We want to find out how she makes it on Lowood, what happens after Lowood? This quote helps the book be a page turner.
